Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall is among celebrities and business people receiving honorary degrees at the University of Manchester today.

The Denton-born singer will receive the accolade to mark his success in the music industry, which has seen him sell more than 50 million albums over 25 years.

Also recognised will be Dame Kathleen Ollerenshaw, a reknowned mathematician and former lecturer at the university.

A former Lord Mayor of Manchester in the 1970s, Dame Ollerenshaw was born in Withington and celebrated her 100th birthday earlier this month.

Shoe repair firm founder John Timpson will also receive the honour.

He opened his first shop in 1987 – and now has more than 800 in the family firm, with an annual turnover of £150m.

He will be joined at today's ceremony by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, the founder and chair of Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee and Sir Philip Craven, president of the International Paralympics Committee, who will both also be honoured.

The university will also recognise Professor Peter Higgs for his work in the 1960s to identify an elementary particle which is now called the Higgs-Boson particle.

He is unable to attend today's ceremony due to illhealth and will be presented with the honorary degree at a later date.

The degrees will be bestowed by TV and radio presenter and former barrister Clive Anderson – who will give a lecture entitled 'Is it time to have TV cameras in court?'

The ceremony takes place at the university's Whitworth Hall this evening.

NOTE: When SEARCHLIGHTs Steve Tilzey, John Penney and others kidnapped a young skinhead in Rochdale in 1981, armed to the teeth. Hucknall was listed as doing a fundraiser for the ROCHDALE 9 as they were called in the extreme lefty press.

What a load of old cobblers.

Timpson's have been around longer than the white cliffs of Dover.

Jews, I believe.

Timpsons were around certainly in the 1960s. They used to have a shop in my local town centre.

I'll have to scan in the fundraiser advert that Hucknall, who is part jewish, did for kidnappers and armed left wing thugs including Tilzey and John Penney.

They certainly were Pete.

I can cast my mind back and pinpoint half-a-dozen to their exact location.

Hucknall is a shitbag of the very worst kind.

When Blair became PM Hucknall would stay with the Blairs at Chequers and sing for his supper.

Can you imagine the ghastly scenes at those weekend love-ins?

It's enough to put a comrade off his caviare
